The firm employs a bottom-up, fundamental research process focused on finding businesses with enduring pricing power and global competitive advantages, generally constructing portfolios of 15–50 holdings. YCG may also write put and covered-call options as part of its “option enhancement” approach and uses a client risk-profile questionnaire to tailor account restrictions and objectives.

What is distinctive about YCG relative to many peers is that it actively manages investment company clients and an affiliated fund while also offering separately managed accounts that may use derivatives and, in certain circumstances, margin/borrowing. The firm discloses a distribution relationship with a registered broker-dealer for its funds, engages in written referral/promoter arrangements, and manages over $1.5 billion of assets with a relatively compact advisory team, practices that are less common among similarly categorized firms.
